US Sanctions Against Iranian Shipping Empire
- The US has imposed sanctions against the Iranian shipping network.
- The sanctions target over 115 individuals and entities.
- Oil exports from Iran have decreased to 1.2 million barrels per day.
On July 30, 2025, the United States imposed sanctions against a major shipping network controlled by the supreme leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, and Mohammad Hosein Shamakani. This step has become the largest sanction measure by the US related to Iran since 2018.
According to the statement from the US Treasury Department, over 115 individuals, legal entities, and entities have been sanctioned, which are part of this shipping empire. Shamakani is implicated in corruption and political influence from his father to create and manage a large fleet of tankers.
This network allows the transportation of oil and petroleum products from Iran and Russia, as well as other cargoes worldwide, generating tens of billions of dollars in revenue. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessenet noted that the Shamakani empire demonstrates how Iranian regime elites exploit their position for the accumulation of wealth and financial security.
Sanctions also target companies registered in Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, and other countries. In addition, the US State Department has imposed sanctions against 20 legal entities for participating in trade with Iranian oil products.
According to recent data, oil exports from Iran have decreased from 1.8 million barrels per day at the beginning of the year to 1.2 million barrels per day. This measure is expected to limit Iran's oil sales, but it is unclear whether it affects the global energy markets.
