- Officer John Luke Evans was arrested by ICE on July 25.
- He had the right to work in the U.S., confirmed by the government.
- Local officials are calling for a review of the processes involved for the police.
Officer reserve police of the Ould Orchard Beach, John Luke Evans, was arrested on July 25, 2025 by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He was a trusted individual in the police department and certainly did not lack his colleagues. According to the words of the police chief Eliz Chard, Evans had the right to work in the U.S., which was confirmed by the Ministry of Internal Security.
Chard noted that the documentation that allowed Evans to work does not expire until 2030. He expressed concern about the lack of information on the case from federal agencies. The police department reached out to E-Verify systems before processing Evans, to verify his right to work.
ICE confirms that Evans attempted to illegally possess a firearm, which became the reason for his arrest. Evans initially entered the U.S. legally, but exceeded the validity period of his visa. Local officials called for a review of the processes involved that allowed Evans to start working.
Chard also reported that the investigation surrounding the arrest is ongoing, and local lawmakers are demanding more transparency in cases involving the police.
