Toronto β Canadian tennis player Gabriel Diallo defeated Italian Matteo Gigante with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (5) on Wednesday, advancing to the third round of the Canadian Open.
Diallo, who is 2 meters 3 centimeters tall, completed the match, which lasted 1 hour 46 minutes, despite a rain delay.
In the second set, he saved two set points when trailing 2-5, then equalized and advanced to the tiebreak. Gigante led 5-3, but Diallo played the last four points, allowing him to win the match ball.
βIn tennis, sometimes everything can change due to a shift in momentum, as you can see throughout the match,β said Diallo.
Last month, he won his first ATP title in the Netherlands. His next opponent will be the winner of the match between American Taylor Fritz and Roberto Carballes Baena from Spain.
In other matches of the second round, fourth seed Ben Shelton from the USA defeated French qualifier Adrian Mannarino with a score of 6-2, 6-3, while sixth seed Andrey Rublev from Russia overcame Hugo Gaston from France with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
