Ontario has signed a contract for internet with Starlink
- Ontario has signed a contract with Starlink for 100 million CAD.
- The signing took place due to US tariffs on Canadian goods.
- Canada and the US will conduct active trade negotiations.
On July 30, 2025, the province of Ontario signed a contract for satellite broadband internet worth 100 million Canadian dollars (68.12 million US dollars) with the company Starlink, which belongs to Elon Musk. This occurred within the framework of the provincial government’s commitment to respond to tariff measures introduced by the United States against Canada.
The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Ontario, Stephen Lecce, confirmed the signing of the agreement at a press conference in Toronto. He did not disclose how much the termination of the agreement would cost.
"I can confirm that the premier has decided to terminate this contract for reasons we discussed earlier," said Lecce. "We stand on the side of Canada."
The contract, signed last fall, provided for the provision of broadband internet for 15,000 households and businesses in the remote communities of Ontario. This summer, Premier Doug Ford threatened to terminate the agreement in response to the introduction of tariffs on Canadian goods by the US President Donald Trump. Subsequently, the termination was delayed after Trump agreed to a 30-day pause on tariffs.
The signing of the agreement took place against the backdrop of ongoing trade negotiations between Canada and the US, which are expected to conclude on September 1. Trump threatens to impose a 35% tariff on all Canadian goods that do not fall under the agreement between the US, Mexico, and Canada. The Premier of Canada Mark Carney stated that the negotiations are at an "intensive stage," but emphasized that the agreement, which would cover all US tariffs, is unlikely.
Lecce also noted that Ontario is taking additional measures against the US, including limiting the ability of American companies to participate in government contracts, reducing the police's alcohol production and working on the development of the energy sector in the province from the US.
