The expansion plan for Heathrow Airport from businessman Arora
- Businessman Arora proposed the expansion plan for Heathrow with a shorter runway.
- The plan envisions the construction of a new runway by 2035.
- Heathrow Airport plans to submit its own version of the expansion proposal without delay.
Businessman Arora presented a plan for the expansion of Heathrow Airport, which competes with the proposal from the airport's owners. The Arora Group stated that the main advantage of their plan is the construction of a shorter new runway, which would allow for unique expensive and complex handling of vehicles on the M25 motorway.
According to the company, the construction of the golden-paved runway, with a length of 2,800 meters instead of the planned 3,500 meters, would reduce risks and costs. Although the shorter runway may have limitations in usage, the Arora Group asserts that it would allow for the accommodation of aircraft of all sizes.
The plan, named Heathrow West, envisions that the new runway will be operational by 2035, while a new terminal will open in two phases: in 2036 and 2040. The estimated cost of the project will be less than £25 billion, not including the reconstruction of the existing central part of the airport.
Arora, who is one of the largest landowners of Heathrow Airport, noted that he is writing to the UK government with their plan, which supports the main goal of the country — to stimulate economic growth in a single hub airport of the country.
Heathrow Airport plans to submit its own expansion plan to the government on July 31. Transport Minister Haid Alexander reiterated the National Airport Policy, which is the basis for accepting decisions on any application for development.
In the case of expansion, the number of flights at Heathrow Airport could increase to 720,000 per year, while currently their number is limited to 480,000.
