U.S. Senate Rejects Effort to Halt Arms Sales to Israel
- The U.S. Senate rejected an effort to ban arms sales to Israel.
- The position among Democrats is growing due to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
- Democrats are calling for an expansion of humanitarian aid in the region.
The U.S. Senate rejected an effort by Senator Bernie Sanders to block sales of bombs and munitions to Israel on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. This decision reflects the increasing opposition among Democrats to arms sales in light of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Sanders, an independent senator from Vermont, has repeatedly sought to block sales of advanced weaponry to Israel. In a vote on July 29, a resolution was blocked that would have halted sales totaling $675 million in the form of bombs and 20,000 automatic rifles. Both resolutions did not receive backing, but 27 Democrats supported the resolution regarding the rifles, while 24 supported the resolution regarding bomb sales.
Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Jim Risch, accused Hamas of being responsible for the conflict and the humanitarian situation in Gaza. All Republicans opposed Sanders' resolution. "They are using the people of Gaza as a living shield," Risch stated.
Democrats who spoke at the hearing called on the Trump administration to reassess its position on the conflict, including through the expansion of humanitarian aid in Gaza through experienced organizations. Senator Patty Murray, who previously voted against similar resolutions, stated that she supports their efforts due to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
