Texas lawmakers seek answers after deadly flooding

Texas lawmakers began searching for answers following the deadly flooding on July 4, which devastated the local area in Kerr County. This incident resulted in the deaths of at least 136 individuals, including 27 young campers and their counselors at the Camp Mystic summer camp.

During the testimonies, which took place on Thursday, local leaders were invited to defend their preparedness and response to the rising water levels. Residents also had the opportunity to reach out to lawmakers.

The testimonies were held in front of a public recording of 911 calls, which showed the panic among residents trying to save themselves. In one of the calls, a woman reported about trapped children at the camp, stating that they might be in danger.

Officials from Kerr County declined to provide recordings of 911 calls and materials from body cameras to the Associated Press. At the same time, lawmakers are discussing funding issues for early warning systems and improving infrastructure in areas prone to flooding.

Governor-republican Greg Abbott has included the issue of disaster assistance after flooding in the agenda of a special session that lasts 30 days. He also received pressure from President Donald Trump regarding the reallocation of funds in Congress.

Residents who live along the Guadalupe River reported that they did not receive prior warnings about the rapid rise of the water. In the Kerr area, there were no warning systems in place, despite the number of potential funding opportunities available.
