Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Helsinki Act and the Role of the OSCE

  • The 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Act is being celebrated in Finland.
  • Zelensky and Guterres will participate in the celebrations.
  • The OSCE is facing challenges due to the aggression of Russia.

On July 31 and August 1, diplomats and politicians will gather in Finland to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Act. This agreement became a significant milestone during the Cold War, when 35 countries, including the Soviet Union and the USA, committed to fundamental principles after two years of negotiations.

The Helsinki Act laid the foundation for the establishment of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) following the collapse of the USSR. During the celebrations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and UN Secretary-General António Guterres will deliver key remarks in Helsinki, discussing the future of the OSCE.

However, questions arise regarding the relevance and effectiveness of the OSCE today. Since the signing of the Helsinki Act, the organization has faced numerous challenges, particularly in connection with Russia's aggressive actions, which annexed Crimea in 2014 and actively interferes in the affairs of other countries, such as Georgia and Ukraine.

The Finnish leadership also announced the launch of "Fund for Helsinki+50", aimed at increasing voluntary funding for the organization. This indicates a commitment to uphold the principles established in the Helsinki Act, regardless of the current difficulties.

Alongside various statements, the OSCE continues to remain an important platform for dialogue and cooperation. However, there is a documented possibility for the organization to remain relevant in the face of increasing tensions between participating states, particularly with Russia.

Discussions during the celebrations, which will cover various topics such as security, reaction, and preparation, may become critically important for shaping the future of the OSCE and its role in ensuring stability in Europe.
