MasterChef Participant Removed After Protests Against Transgender Inclusion

  • Sara Shafi protested against the inclusion of transgender individuals in the new season of MasterChef.
  • Hosts Greg Wallace and John Torode were suspended following allegations of inappropriate conduct.
  • BBC confirmed that the show's inclusion of transgender individuals sparked controversy among participants.

In the new season of MasterChef, participant Sara Shafi was removed from the program after she requested producers not to include transgender individuals in the show. She expressed concerns that the show's airing could improperly influence the societal perception of women and their status in society.

Shafi, who works at St John Ambulance, initially declined to participate in the producers' proposal to remove her from the episode, but later changed her mind after BBC's announcement about the show's inclusion of transgender individuals on September 6.

She stated that her removal was not due to her participation being edited, but rather as a way to avoid broadcasting the show altogether, since it could exacerbate issues of power abuse.

Earlier this month, a poll was released confirming that 45 out of 83 respondents raised concerns against Greg Wallace, including incidents of inappropriate conduct. Following this, Wallace and John Torode were suspended from hosting the program.

Shafi mentioned that during a conversation with the producer, she expressed her discomfort regarding the show's inclusion of transgender individuals. She suggested creating a special episode dedicated to post-transition experiences, without the participation of well-known hosts.

BBC confirmed that the decision regarding the show's inclusion of transgender individuals was unanimous and that not all participants agree with it. They noted that the majority of participants supported the show.
