Next Raises Sales Forecast Following Good Weather and M&S Problems

  • Next has raised its sales and profit forecast following good weather.
  • Marks & Spencer stores reported losses due to the downturn.
  • Next's like-for-like sales have risen thanks to a successful marketing strategy.

Next has once again raised its annual sales and profit forecast following a strong quarter, which could be attributed to good weather and problems faced by competitor Marks & Spencer due to the downturn.

In the second quarter, which ended on July 26, Next's sales increased by 10.5%, and for the first half of the year, growth was 10.9%. In the UK, sales increased by 7.8% in the second quarter due to "better than expected weather and a boost in retail from a major competitor".

Marks & Spencer was forced to suspend online trading for almost two months from mid-April due to a serious downturn. Next stated that it does not expect these factors to significantly impact the second half of the year, so it does not raise forecasts for sales in the UK for this period.

It is expected that sales growth in the UK will slow to 1.9% due to reduced hiring opportunities, which was triggered by a significant increase in national insurance contributions for employers. Next also indicated that consumer spending may decline as a result of these changes in the economy.

However, like-for-like sales grew by 28.1% in the first half of the year, and the company forecasts growth of 19.4% in the second half of the year due to a successful marketing strategy.

In addition, the company recently announced the acquisition of the Seraphine brand, which specializes in clothing for pregnant women, for £600,000. The brand plans to relaunch with the help of its founder, Cecily Renard, who remains a director in its revival.
