Arrested suspect in the arson of a synagogue in Melbourne appears in court

  • 21-year-old Giovanni Laulu is accused of arson at a synagogue in Melbourne.
  • The police suspect the presence of accomplices who planned the attack across the border.
  • The Australian government allocated 30 million dollars for the restoration of the synagogue.

In Melbourne, Australia, 21-year-old Giovanni Laulu appeared in court following his arrest for the arson of the Adass Israel synagogue on December 6. This incident sparked significant resonance in the community and calls for a larger investigation.

The police confirm that Laulu was one of three masked individuals who spread a rare incendiary substance around the synagogue and set it on fire. One of the congregants, who was preparing for early morning prayers, received minor injuries.

Laulu became the first person arrested in this case, and the police are looking at more arrests, considering that there are accomplices who planned the attack across the border.

He is charged with arson, with no bail set pending his return to life and the custody of the automobile. During a brief appearance in court, he confirmed his name but remained silent. Laulu did not file a motion for release under bail.

Prosecutors requested 12 weeks to gather evidence against Laulu, stating that it is necessary to analyze 11 mobile phones. The court granted prosecutors until January 22 to present the case.

The investigation involves federal and state police, as well as the Australian Crime Commission, as the crime is considered politically motivated. The investigation has already consumed over 50,000 hours of work by more than 220 detectives.

The head of the Victoria police, Mike Bush, stated that the police will aggressively pursue everyone involved in the arson of the synagogue. He emphasized the importance of safety for people, especially in their places of worship.

The attack on the synagogue is classified as an act of terrorism, which allows for additional resources to be allocated to the investigation. The federal government of Australia allocated 30 million Australian dollars (approximately 20 million US dollars) for the restoration of the synagogue.
