On July 31, 2025, Russia stated that its forces had captured the important city of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine after over 16 months of intense fighting. According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, control over the city could threaten Ukrainian cities in the Donetsk region, such as Kostiantynivka, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk.
However, Ukrainian military officials have refuted this information. They reported that Russian forces only advanced partially over areas they previously occupied. A spokesperson for the Ukrainian forces stated that the information about complete Russian control over the city is inaccurate. According to DeepState data, the Ukrainian project with open data indicates that the western part of Chasiv Yar remains under Ukrainian control.
Currently, during the announcement of the capture, Russia has carried out a massive drone attack on Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of at least six people, including a child. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that such actions demonstrate Russia's unwillingness to engage in peaceful negotiations.
The fighting for Chasiv Yar has been ongoing for over a year, and the city has become strategically important due to its location. As of today, the city has suffered from destruction, and its population has decreased to 12 thousand people since the beginning of the war.
