Lebanese President Calls on Hezbollah to Surrender Weapons

  • The Lebanese president has called on Hezbollah to surrender its weapons.
  • The USA demands formal obligations from Lebanon regarding the disarmament of Hezbollah.
  • The plan includes international aid to support the Lebanese army.

This is reported by Asharq Al-Awsat, Asharq Al-Awsat.

The Lebanese president Joseph Aoun has again called on Hezbollah and other political forces to surrender their weapons during the promotion of the Lebanese army's Day, celebrated on July 31, 2025. This call comes against the backdrop of increasing pressure from the USA on Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah.

Aoun noted that Lebanon proposes a US plan that includes urgent military assistance from Israel, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, and the removal of Lebanese militias that are being retained in Israel. He also emphasized the necessity of disarming all armed formations, including Hezbollah, and transferring their weapons to the Lebanese army.

The leader of Hezbollah Sheikh Nasrallah has rejected the disarmament demands. He stated that such calls serve only Israel's interests. Nasrallah asserts that surrendering weapons means transferring them to Israel, and he insisted that Hezbollah will not disarm.

Meanwhile, Aoun reported that the plan also includes international obligations in the amount of 1 billion dollars annually for a decade to support the Lebanese army and an international conference to raise funds for the restoration of destroyed areas.

Debates about Hezbollah's disarmament have been ongoing for a long time, and they have become particularly relevant following last year's war with Israel, which caused significant losses and damaged much of Lebanon's infrastructure. The Prime Minister of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, confirmed that the issue of control over the weapons will be discussed at the next cabinet meeting, which will take place as soon as possible.
