On July 31, 2025, Prime Minister of Lithuania Gintautas Paluckas submitted his resignation following an investigation into his business activities, which provoked protests in the capital of the country. President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda announced Paluckas's resignation during a press conference on Thursday.

Paluckas, who headed a new coalition of social democrats last year, now may have to step down from his position, and his cabinet, likely, will also submit their resignation. This could leave the country without a minority government ahead of joint military exercises with Russia and Belarus.

Paluckas was implicated in scandals related to his business, including an investigation revealing that he failed to pay part of a fine of 16,500 euros in a case related to improper actions during the tender for the provision of services for the removal of shrubs in Vilnius. A court in 2012 found him guilty of abusing his official position.

He denies the charges and asserts that the criticism is part of a "coordinated attack" by his political opponents. Paluckas's resignation came after several weeks of planned exercises that underscore Lithuania's strategic position.
