Trump threatens Canada over support for Palestine
- Trump threatens Canada with increased tariffs due to support for Palestine.
- Canada plans to recognize Palestine at the UN meeting in September.
- The deadline for concluding a trade agreement with the USA is September 1.
President Donald Trump warned that Canada's support for Palestinians in the matter of statehood could jeopardize the conclusion of a trade agreement with that country.
As it stands, the deadline set by Trump for concluding the agreement, the president has sharply expressed concern about the decision of Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney to recognize Palestine in September.
Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform: "Canada has just announced that it supports statehood for Palestine. This could jeopardize the conclusion of a trade agreement with them. Oh, Canada!!!".
Carney noted that Canada has "long supported the decision of two states," which implies the recognition of an independent Palestine alongside Israel.
This move could further isolate the USA from key allies amid the growing international pressure due to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, exacerbated by the blockade imposed by Israeli forces.
Meanwhile, the US Senate passed two resolutions, sponsored by Senator Bernie Sanders, which aimed to halt arms sales to Israel. Although these proposals did not pass, a majority of Senate Democrats supported them, indicating a shift in Washington's position regarding the conflict in Gaza.
Trump established September 1 as the deadline for achieving a trade agreement with Canada. If the agreement is not concluded, tariffs of 35% may be imposed on goods that do not comply with the Canada-US-Mexico agreement.
Carney previously noted that the Canadian government does not intend to rush to finalize an agreement before Trump's deadline, emphasizing that the goal is not simply to conclude an agreement at any cost.
Canada is the second-largest trading partner of the USA after Mexico and the largest buyer of American goods.
