The Parliament of Ukraine Supported the Law on the Independence of Anti-Corruption Agencies
- The Parliament approved the law on restoring the independence of anti-corruption agencies.
- It was noted that the change in the status of the EU to the government of Ukraine followed the scandal.
- Financial assistance to Ukraine may be preserved on the condition of implementing reforms.
The Parliament of Ukraine, known as the Verkhovna Rada, on July 31, 2025, approved a bill that restores the independence of two key anti-corruption agencies of the country. The law was submitted by President Volodymyr Zelensky after criticism of his previous decision, which limited their powers.
In the voting, 331 deputies participated, with nine abstaining. Earlier, on July 22, the approved decision on subordinating anti-corruption agencies to the General Prosecutor provoked outrage among Ukrainians, European partners, and human rights organizations.
This scandal changed the status of the European Union to the Ukrainian government. The next steps of Ukraine in the direction of European integration may become more difficult, as European partners plan to exert more retail control over the implementation of reforms.
Among the negative consequences, if the new law is successfully implemented, it may help to eliminate the term limitation of financial assistance to Ukraine, including within the framework of the Ukraine Facility program.
