Moscow (AP) — July 31, 2025, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with the new foreign minister of Syria, Aasadam al-Shibani. This was the first official meeting with a representative of the new Syrian government following the resignation of former President Bashar al-Assad last year.

At the beginning of the negotiations, Lavrov expressed hope that the Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa would participate in the Russia-Arab summit scheduled for January 15. Al-Shibani confirmed that their visit to Moscow is aimed at discussing important issues for the future of Syria.

During the meeting, Lavrov emphasized that Russia supports the territorial integrity of Syria and is ready to assist in the restoration of the regions affected by the conflict. The Syrian foreign minister also thanked Russia for its position regarding Israeli strikes on Syrian territory.

Al-Shibani stressed that the new Syrian government does not have hostile intentions towards Israel and seeks stable peace in the country. He called on Russia to support the process of "transitional justice" in Syria, noting that a committee had been established to review previous agreements between the countries.

Lavrov also urged the Syrian colleagues to ensure the safety of Russian citizens and bases in Syria. He reaffirmed Russia's support for the unity and independence of Syria and its readiness to engage in further dialogue on these issues.
