In Sweden, a man was convicted for his role in the murder of a pilot in 2015

On Thursday, July 31, 2025, a Swedish court found 32-year-old Osama Krajim guilty of serious war crimes and terrorism for his involvement in the murder of Jordanian pilot Muat al-Qasasbeh. The court upheld the ruling on complicity.

The pilot Muat al-Qasasbeh was captured by a terrorist group "Islamic State" in late 2014 after the downing of his F-16 fighter jet in Syria. In the summer of 2015, a video of his execution was released, in which he was burned alive in a cage.

Krajim, who arrived in Syria in late 2014 to participate in battles on the side of ISIS, had previously been convicted in France and Brussels for involvement in terrorist attacks. According to the court's statements, although he did not directly cause the pilot's death, he also played a role in the murder.

Judge Anna Liljenberg Gullesjö stated that Krajim's actions were considered as active involvement, which makes him regarded as a co-perpetrator of the crime. Along with Swedish legislation, courts can convict individuals for violations of international law committed outside of Sweden.

This case underscores that Sweden continues to pursue accountability for individuals who commit crimes in conflicts for which they are responsible, particularly in Syria, where the "Islamic State" controlled large territories between 2014 and 2017.
