The Longest Lightning Strike Recorded in the World

  • The longest lightning strike reached 829 km in the USA.
  • The use of satellites allowed for more precise measurements of lightning.
  • The WMO emphasizes the danger of lightning for people during thunderstorms.

A new world record has been set for the longest lightning strike, measuring 515 miles (829 km). This strike occurred on July 22, 2017, over the Great Plains of the USA, stretching from eastern Texas to the vicinity of Kansas City, Missouri.

This strike was confirmed by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and is a result of improved technology for satellite monitoring, which allowed for precise measurements of lightning over great distances. Previously, until 2016, data was only collected from ground-based sensors, which limited the ability to observe.

The previous record, which reached 768 km, was also recorded over the Great Plains on April 29, 2020. Both records have a margin of error of about eight kilometers.

Research has shown that lightning can travel significant distances from the thunderstorm center, creating danger for people who may not be under the storm at the time. The WMO recommends avoiding being outside during thunderstorms and seeking shelter in sturdy buildings or vehicles.

These new findings highlight the power of lightning and the importance of early warning systems for hazardous weather events, which the WMO plans to implement by 2027.
