EU Confirms Continued Funding for Ukraine After Restoration of Anticorruption Agencies
- The EU will continue funding for Ukraine following the adoption of a new law.
- The law restores the independence of anticorruption agencies.
- Ukraine is obliged to implement reforms to strengthen the rule of law.
This was reported by Interfax Ukraine, Ukrayinska Pravda.
The European Union has no plans to suspend funding for Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the independence of anticorruption agencies, which are the foundation of the rule of law.
This statement was made by EU Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders on July 31 in Brussels. He noted that the bodies related to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) triggered serious concerns in the EU.
Reynders confirmed that after the adoption of the law, which restores the independence of NABU and SAP, funding from the EU side will not be suspended. "We clearly expressed our position. It is important that Ukraine has independent anticorruption agencies, and Ukraine has implemented the necessary reforms to ensure the rule of law," he said.
He also noted that Ukraine needs to quickly appoint the head of the Bureau of Economic Security, restore the composition of the international experts in the High Qualification Commission of Judges, continue appointing four international judges to the Constitutional Court, and resolve problematic amendments to the Criminal Code. These steps are considered essential for strengthening the rule of law in Ukraine.
