I observe fireflies in the summer, but their numbers are decreasing

  • Fireflies have become more numerous this summer due to favorable conditions.
  • The population of fireflies is decreasing due to pollution and habitat loss.
  • Experts suggest changing behavior to conserve these insects.

In New York, fireflies illuminate summer evenings, creating stunning displays in yards and city parks. Experts note that the humid spring season may create favorable conditions for the development of young fireflies in adulthood, which can beautify summer nights.

There are about 2000 known species of fireflies, which use their characteristic flashes for communication and to search for partners. In New York, these insects can be observed in all five boroughs, especially in Central Park and Prospect Park.

Although this summer appears brighter, the firefly population is still decreasing, with the rate of decline accelerating. According to Metta Schlesinger from the New York City Natural Resources Program, it is not worth considering that high numbers this year indicate a lack of decline.

The reasons for the decline in population include habitat loss, pesticide use, and light pollution. Bright advertising, automobiles, and streetlights in cities hinder fireflies from finding each other and continuing their lineage.

Entomologist Jessica Uher emphasizes that fireflies are part of the summer's natural history. She recalls that her children grew up observing them in the yard, but their numbers began to decrease as her children became teenagers. In recent months, her family has once again seen fireflies, which has sparked thoughts about children who are just beginning to observe these insects.

To observe fireflies, it is recommended to turn off lights at night and avoid using insecticides. "We need to change our behavior so that large populations can remain large," says Uher.
