Documenting Violence in Tigray and Its Consequences

  • Violence in Tigray is recognized as a crime against humanity.
  • Many victims are women and children who have suffered sexual violence.
  • The international community is called upon to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators.

According to a new report, journalistic violence related to the conflict in Tigray continues to occur today. The organizations Physicians for Human Rights and OJAH have identified systematic incidents of mass sexual violence, including rape and sexual violence, which are recognized as crimes against humanity.

The research includes data from medical records of over 500 patients and surveys of 602 medical professionals. It was noted that 91% of medical professionals confirmed incidents of sexual violence involving multiple perpetrators, and 90% of them saw patients with unreported pregnancies due to sexual violence.

According to the data, the perpetration of violence occurred with specific journalistic methods, such as the establishment of external premises in the statutes of victim organizations. The majority of perpetrators were identified as soldiers from Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Psychologists and medical professionals who work with victims report on the deep psychological trauma in survivors, many of whom live in camps for internally displaced persons.

The report also emphasizes the importance of international investigation of perpetrators, as the lack of accountability for such actions continues to violate human rights.
