Birth of the Oldest Child from a Frozen Embryo
- Taddeus Daniel Pierce has become the oldest child from a frozen embryo.
- The embryo was frozen for over 30 years; prior to this, three children had held the record.
- Linda Archer and Tim Pierce chose seven embryos for implantation.
In the USA, the oldest child known to have been born from an embryo was born in 1994. The baby, named Taddeus Daniel Pierce, was born on July 26 in Ohio. His parents, Linda and Tim Pierce, received the embryo from Linda Archer, who is now 62 years old.
In the 1990s, Archer and her husband decided to start using the method of embryo cryopreservation (EC) after which four embryos were created. One of them became the reason for the birth of Archer's son, who is now 30 years old. Three other embryos were frozen.
Linda Pierce noted that they did not plan to set records, but simply wanted to have a child. Archer gained the rights to the embryos after the divorce and decided that it was important for the child to be connected to her daughter.
She found an agency for embryo adoption that allowed them to choose a couple for adoption, and selected seven Pierce embryos, as it was important to her that this be a Christian couple.
The clinic where the embryo transfer took place has a principle that all embryos deserve a chance at life. It is known that this birth set a record for the longest time an embryo was frozen.
It is beginning to be noted that in the United Kingdom, the number of births from donated EC has increased from 1.3% in 2000 to 3.1% in 2023.
