Athletes Remember Laura Dahlmeier After Her Tragic Death

  • Laura Dahlmeier died as a result of a rockfall in Pakistan.
  • Attempts to evacuate her body were halted due to unsafe conditions.
  • The athlete's team did not attempt to rescue her, as this would have endangered the rescuers.

Laura Dahlmeier, an Olympic champion from Germany in biathlon, died in a tragic accident in the mountains of Pakistan. The 31-year-old athlete perished after being struck by falling rocks while descending to the peak of Laila in Karakoram at an altitude of 5700 meters.

The authorities confirmed her death on July 31, but efforts to evacuate her body were suspended due to unsafe weather conditions. Representatives of Dahlmeier stated that her relatives continue to monitor the situation and may organize a rescue operation later.

Dahlmeier's colleagues noted that she did not want her body to be collected, as this would endanger the rescuers. German alpine skier Thomas Hubert, who participated in the rescue attempt, confirmed that the decision to leave the body in place was made based on her wishes.

Dahlmeier won seven gold medals at world championships and became the first female biathlete to win sprint and pursuit events at the same Olympic Games in 2018 in Pyeongchang. She ended her career in 2019 at the age of 25.
