In China, the distribution of abuse is increasing through a Telegram group that shares videos
- A Telegram group has been sharing private images of women without consent.
- Hashtags related to the scandal have received millions of views on Weibo.
- Chinese legislation provides for light penalties for taking photos without consent.
Abuse in China is increasing following the publication of information about a group on Telegram, where individuals were sharing photographs of women, including sexually explicit ones, taken without their consent. The group, named "MaskPark tree hole forum," has nearly 100 thousand participants, all of whom are men.
Participants in the group published private images of their girlfriends, family members, and videos, taken using hidden cameras. Some of these videos were recorded in public places, such as hospitals, toilets, and shopping centers. This has created a significant wave of concern among women in China.
After the information about the group surfaced, hashtags related to the scandal received over 11 million views on the Weibo platform. However, it is evident that some discussions are subject to censorship, as responses to requests to view the content indicate that the material cannot be displayed.
Despite the fact that Telegram is blocked in China, it can be accessed through virtual private networks (VPNs). Chinese laws regarding photography without consent provide for administrative penalties, which include up to ten days of detention and fines.
Research shows that for the punishment of offenders in this case, difficulties may arise due to the closure of platforms and the lack of evidence. Some lawyers indicate that women who have become victims do not have adequate legal support.
