OpenAI Launches Data Processing Center in Norway for Artificial Intelligence

  • OpenAI is launching its first data processing center in Europe in Norway.
  • The project is expected to have a capacity of 230 MW with the possibility of expansion.
  • Funding is expected to be close to 1 billion dollars from partners.

This is reported by Mezha, TechCrunch.

OpenAI has announced the launch of a new data processing center called Stargate in Norway, which will be the first of its kind in Europe. The Norwegian company Nscale Global Holdings Ltd., along with Aker ASA, will ensure the construction of the center, which will initially have a capacity of 20 MW.

This project involves a joint ownership between Nscale and Aker, while OpenAI will act as the main consumer, purchasing the capacity of this center. The total capacity that is planned to be achieved will be 230 MW, with further plans to increase it to 290 MW.

The center will be located near Narvik, in northern Norway, known for its resources of hydroelectric energy and mild climate. OpenAI plans to utilize 100,000 NVIDIA graphics processors by the end of 2026.

The project is funded through approximately 1 billion dollars allocated by Nscale and Aker. Importantly, the center will operate exclusively on renewable energy sources and will introduce technologies for effective cooling.

This project is part of a broader European initiative to achieve independence in the field of artificial intelligence and investment in data processing infrastructure. European leaders are actively calling for increased investment in technology to avoid falling behind the USA and China.
