Budapest, Hungary (AP) — Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen confirmed that he will stay with the Red Bull team for the upcoming year, concluding months of speculation about his future. The four-time champion stated that he is discussing plans with the team for 2026, which indicates his contract extension.
Verstappen has an agreement with Red Bull until 2028. Previously, he hinted at direct interest regarding his future, and also mentioned the possibility that certain contract conditions might allow him to leave earlier. However, following recent races, it became known that his exit point cannot be activated, since he is guaranteed to occupy third place in the world championship after the Hungarian Grand Prix.
At the same time, Mercedes driver George Russell confirmed that his team is negotiating with Verstappen, although he himself is eyeing an extension of the contract with Mercedes. This came after Christian Horner was dismissed from the position of team principal of Red Bull and replaced by Laurent Mekies.
Thus, Verstappen expressed all feelings about his transition to Mercedes, emphasizing that he has always been focused on improving the team's performance and collaborating with them.
