San Diego Padres have made a significant agreement in the pitching market, acquiring pitcher Mason Miller and left-handed pitcher JP Sears from Oakland Athletics. The Padres sent outfielders in exchange for these players, including a package of young talents, among which is highlighted shortstop Leo De Vries.
Miller, 26, is one of the fastest pitchers in the league, with a pitching speed exceeding 104 miles per hour. This season, he has already recorded 20 saves out of 23 attempts, with a median ERA of 3.76. According to projections for 2024, he will be a participant in the All-Star Game.
Sears, 29, has a record of 7-9 and an ERA of 4.95, having struck out 95 batters in 22 starts. The deal was finalized on the last day of the trading period, when the Padres were aiming to strengthen their roster in the playoff race.
The Padres currently have a record of 60-49 and occupy the last place in the race for the wild card in the National League. Acquiring Miller could significantly improve their chances of reaching the playoffs, especially since the team is trying to catch up with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.
