Trump Attacks Brazilian Democracy and Judicial System
- Trump imposed a tariff on imports from Brazil and sanctions on the judiciary.
- Brazilian citizens are outraged by U.S. interference in their democracy.
- Experts believe in the success of Trump's campaign.
For the past six months, Donald Trump has been accused of attempting to transform the largest democracy in America into an authoritarian regime. Currently, the U.S. President has also begun attacks on the second largest democracy in the region – Brazil.
Since the beginning of July, Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on imports from Brazil and introduced sanctions against the Brazilian judiciary, which is involved in the judicial process against his ally Jair Bolsonaro, who is suspected of attempting a coup.
Experts note that Trump is using trade policy as a tool to achieve his political goals, which is causing outrage among many Brazilians. They believe that this foreign interference is unacceptable, especially after 40 years since the restoration of democracy following two decades of dictatorship.
Mark Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, previously discussed sanctions imposed on the judiciary Alexander de Moraes, failing to mention fundamental civil rights. These sanctions freeze the assets of the judiciary in American banks and prohibit them from traveling to the U.S.
Trump is trying to support Bolsonaro to prevent judicial proceedings that have caused outrage in Brazil. Many Brazilians believe that such actions by Trump could lead to a resurgence of anti-American sentiments in the country.
Some experts believe that Trump, supporting Bolsonaro, wants to revive his political career, but others believe that this is merely a distraction for advancing American economic interests.
Regardless of Trump's attempts, it is expected that Bolsonaro, who is already barred from running for election until 2030, will receive sovereign immunity for the accusations in the coup attempt. Experts speculate that Trump will succeed in his campaign.
