Google Loses Appeal Regarding Changes to the App Store
- Google has been ordered to change its app store following a ruling in court
- Epic Games won an antitrust case against Google
- The company Google plans to appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States
This is reported by TechCrunch, The Verge.
The company Google filed an appeal against a court ruling that requires it to change its app store in the case concerning antitrust practices filed by the company Epic Games, which is the developer of Fortnite. This is reported by Reuters.
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in the U.S. rejected Google’s arguments that the judge conducting the court proceedings allowed legal assumptions that unfairly favored Epic Games. Epic Games filed its lawsuit in 2020 and was able to modify the claims in 2023, stating that Google unlawfully stifled competition. The court indicated Google in the past year to open its app store to competitors and provide Android users with more options when downloading apps. This ruling was suspended until the completion of Google’s appeals process.
Google asserted that its Play Store competes with Apple’s App Store and that the court unfairly prohibited it from presenting this argument in defense of antitrust claims from Epic.
The company confirmed that it plans to file an appeal to the Supreme Court of the United States, noting that this ruling could negatively impact user choice and innovation, which are important for Android ecosystems.
