Australia restricts access to social networks for minors

  • The law restricts access to social networks for individuals under 16 years old
  • YouTube is included in the list of restricted platforms in Australia
  • Experts express concerns about the effectiveness of the ban for improving the mental health of minors

The Australian government has enacted legislation that restricts access to social networks, including YouTube, for individuals under 16 years old. This law will come into effect in mid-2025. The aim of the measure is to reduce the impact of digital platforms on the mental health of young people. Previously, YouTube was excluded from this list, but a recent report indicated that nearly a third of Australian children were exposed to harmful content on this platform.

The Minister for Social Services of Australia, Anneka Wells, stated that the aim of the law is to protect young people from harmful algorithms that promote addiction to content. Under the new law, young users will not be able to create public accounts, subscribe to channels, or actively interact on the platforms.

Social networks, including TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat, are already subject to similar analog restrictions. However, despite these measures, experts express doubts about the effectiveness of the bans in combating mental health issues among young people. Studies show that there is a high correlation between excessive use of social networks and deteriorating mental health, although the causal relationship remains largely unclear.

Social networks like YouTube are already exploring legal options to challenge the Australian government's decision. Companies argue that these platforms should not be considered social networks and express concerns about losing potential audiences.
