The U.S. government will pay 154,000 workers for voluntary separation
- 154,000 federal workers in the U.S. will receive compensation for voluntary separation.
- The program for voluntary separation was initiated due to excessive spending and inefficiency.
- A decrease in the number of workers may negatively impact the U.S. economy.
The federal government of the U.S. is compensating over 154,000 workers who participated in the voluntary separation program. This program allows workers to remain on paid leave until the end of the financial year on September 30. According to The Washington Post, this will account for over 6% of the total number of federal employees, which currently stands at 2.3 million.
The program was established after President Donald Trump issued demands regarding work in the office. It has drawn criticism from some experts, who argue that it has led to chaos in federal institutions. On the other hand, proponents of the program believe it helps to streamline costs in the long-term perspective.
Representatives from the Office of Personnel Management assert that the program is legal and ensures a smooth exit for over 150,000 federal employees. Meanwhile, some workers are using their free time to look for new jobs and other opportunities.
However, according to estimates, the program could lead to losses in the range of over 21 billion dollars due to inefficiencies in management and staffing.
Additionally, analysis shows that the decrease in the number of workers could result in losses exceeding 10 billion dollars in U.S. economic activity.
