Radioactive Nest Discovered at the Savannah River Site in Southern Carolina

  • A radioactive nest was discovered at the Savannah River Site.
  • The level of radiation in the nest exceeded permissible limits by 10 times.
  • A group of activists expressed concern regarding the origin of the contamination.

In Southern Carolina, on the territory of the plant where components for nuclear weapons were previously manufactured, a radioactive nest was discovered. Since July 3, 2025, workers engaged in monitoring radiation levels at the Savannah River Site found a nest near the reservoirs for the storage of rare nuclear waste.

According to a report from the U.S. Department of Energy, the level of radiation in the nest exceeded permissible limits by 10 times. The nest was treated with an insecticide and utilized as radioactive waste. However, no source of this contamination was identified.

The government confirmed that there are no leaks from the reservoirs, but the radioactivity of the nest likely resulted from "legacy radioactive contamination," which remained from the time when the plant operated at full capacity.

The group of activists Savannah River Site Watch expressed its dissatisfaction, stating that the report does not contain important information about the origin of the contamination and the possibility of the existence of other radioactive nests.

According to the words of the executive director of the group, Thomas Clement, there is a concern regarding whether there could be leaks from the reservoirs, which the community should be aware of. He emphasized that these sites usually do not fly far from their nests, thus their presence within the territory of the plant is minimal.

The Savannah River Site was opened in the 1950s for the production of plutonium and tritium for nuclear weapons, and now focuses on the cleaned territories and managing nuclear materials.
