The number of migrants crossing La Manche will reach a record in 2025
- The number of migrants crossing La Manche has reached a record.
- The Government of the United Kingdom is facing criticism due to the increase in the number of migrants.
- Political debates regarding immigration are intensifying in the country.
The number of migrants who arrived in the United Kingdom, crossing La Manche, surpassed 25,000 individuals in record terms. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, only on July 31, 898 people made the crossing in 13 small boats, which increased the total number of arrivals in 2025 to 25,436.
This figure is 51 percent higher than in the previous year, when on the same date 16,842 people arrived. It is also 73 percent higher than in 2023, when the number stood at 14,732. The year 2025 became the first when 25,000 individuals were registered so early in the calendar year since the beginning of the counting of crossings at La Manche in 2018.
Previously, in 2022, this threshold was crossed on August 27, and in 2023 – on February 2. Prime Minister Keir Starmer promised to intensify the fight against traffickers who engage in the smuggling of people across La Manche.
Critics of the government, including representatives of the Conservative Party, point to the increasing number of migrants as a failure. They assert that the government’s actions do not change the situation, and a new agreement with France regarding the return of asylum seekers does not solve the problems.
Meanwhile, some politicians, such as Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, emphasize that the situation requires urgent action and express dissatisfaction with the increasing costs of supporting migrants.
This situation continues to provoke outrage in society, especially after a series of protests against the accommodation of asylum seekers in hotels.
