Trump Demands Price Reductions on Drugs from Pharmaceutical Companies
- Trump demands price reductions on drugs from 17 pharmaceutical companies.
- The deadline for compliance is 60 days.
- Drug prices in the USA exceed prices in other countries by three times.
Overview
President of the USA Donald Trump expressed demands to 17 major pharmaceutical companies to lower drug prices for American consumers. In letters sent on Thursday, Trump specified that the deadline for compliance would be 60 days.
In the letters, Trump addressed companies such as AbbVie, Pfizer, Novo Nordisk, and Eli Lilly, ensuring that these so-called "Most Favored Nation" prices apply to all drugs provided to Medicaid. This means that drug prices will correspond to the lowest price that is charged in other countries.
Trump indicated that some prices on brand-name drugs in the USA exceed prices in other developed countries by more than three times. He noted that his administration was not satisfied with the results of discussions between representatives of the Department of Health and pharmaceutical companies.
The letters also indicated that if any company does not comply with these demands, Trump is ready to use all available instruments to protect American families from inflated drug prices.
It is noted that earlier, in April 2025, Trump signed an executive order requiring drug manufacturers to start offering American patients lower prices.
At that time, the prices of pharmaceutical company stocks, to which letters were sent, fell by 1-4% after the announcement by Trump.
