250 National Guards Remain in Los Angeles

  • Pentagon completes the withdrawal of the majority of troops in Los Angeles.
  • 250 guards will remain to protect federal facilities.
  • Local officials are speaking out against the presence of troops in the city.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Pentagon announced that as of July 31, 2025, it will complete the withdrawal of the majority of national guards in Los Angeles. Since the beginning of June, nearly 4,000 guards and 700 marine personnel have been deployed to the city due to protests against immigration raids conducted by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to the announcement, 1,350 guards will remain in Los Angeles, while 250 troops will stay to protect federal buildings and personnel. This information was confirmed by Pentagon spokesperson Shawn Parneell.

Earlier, on June 7, there was a mobilization of troops to support federal functions in the city, which provoked a backlash from local leaders. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the deployment of troops "another overreach for Los Angeles."

The protests that took place in the city were predominantly small and spontaneous. California Governor Gavin Newsom also expressed concerns regarding the use of national guards, considering that they should not be used as "props in the federal government's propaganda machine."

In June, Newsom filed a lawsuit against the federal government, asserting that Trump had exceeded his authority by activating guards without prior notification. A lower court has temporarily blocked this decision, with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals currently reviewing it.
