- Demonstrators demanded that Bulos be kept in the USA.
The immigration court in Miami upheld the decision that the Haitian businessman and former presidential candidate, Pér Reginald Bulos, should remain under guard in the USA. He is detained for accusations of supporting armed gangs in Haiti.
Bulos was arrested in southern Florida at the beginning of July. He was accused in "a campaign of violence and support for gangs that fueled the destabilization of Haiti," the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported.
Bulos is a well-known representative of the Haitian elite and was the highest-profile Haitian businessman during Trump’s immigration enforcement campaign. The hearing in Bulos's case took place behind closed doors, journalists and other individuals were not allowed access to the courtroom.
After the hearing, which took place on July 31, Bulos's release was denied. According to information close to the case, details of the hearing were not disclosed.
About a dozen people gathered outside the detention center, calling for Bulos to be kept in the USA or anywhere else, just not in Haiti. Some of them held placards, which stated that if Bulos returns to Haiti, he will not remain in the country.
The U.S. government has not disclosed details of Bulos's case. After the ICE arrest, it was reported that Bulos did not disclose in his application for obtaining residency his participation in the formation of a political party and that the Haitian government recommended him for prosecution for abusing loans.
Bulos previously denied accusations of corruption in Haiti. In 2019, he founded the political party "Third Way," which, according to his words, aimed to protest against the "unscrupulous elite" of Haiti.
Bulos, who was born in the USA, distanced himself from U.S. citizenship in connection with his candidacy for the presidential elections, which did not take place. He received U.S. resident status last year during the Biden administration.
