Sadiq Khan speaks out against the third runway at Heathrow Airport
- Sadiq Khan plans to take legal action against the expansion of Heathrow
- Heathrow Airport proposes investments of £50 billion
- Expansion could create 100,000 jobs
Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, announced his intention to take legal action against the government of the United Kingdom over the plans to expand Heathrow Airport, including the construction of a third runway. He emphasized that this decision would have a "serious impact" on noise levels and air pollution, as well as hinder climate goals.
In response to these plans, Heathrow submitted its "shovel-ready" plans for expansion, which include investments amounting to £50 billion. This would allow for up to 750 additional flights per day, which, according to estimates, could increase the number of passengers to 150 million per year.
Furthermore, Khan highlighted the negative impact of the expansion on London’s transport infrastructure. At the same time, Chancellor Rishi Sunak supported the expansion plans, believing that it could create up to 100,000 jobs and stimulate economic growth.
The plans to expand Heathrow Airport are not new. They have already received government support but were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now the airport is once again appealing to the government for approval, hoping for a positive decision in the coming months.
Among the opponents of the expansion are other politicians, such as the Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, who argue that this decision will only exacerbate economic inequality, concentrating development in London.
