In New York City, thousands of people gathered to pay their last respects to police officer Diedarul Islam, who was killed during a mass shooting in the city center on July 31, 2025.

The funeral took place at the Parkchester Jame Masjid in the Bronx, where Islam lived. He was 36 years old. This incident became the largest shooting in the city in the last 25 years. According to reports, the shooter, 27-year-old Sheikh Tamura, entered the office building on Park Avenue with an automatic weapon and began shooting, killing Islam and three others, before taking his own life.

At the ceremony, there were hundreds of officers from 54 of the 77 precincts in New York, as well as colleagues from neighboring states. The streets surrounding the mosque were closed to vehicles, and Police Commissioner Jessica Tish stated that Islam had come to the U.S. as an immigrant from Bangladesh in search of a better life.

During the four-hour ceremony, rituals of mourning were conducted. A flag with the police emblem was draped over the coffin, and floral wreaths filled the room. New York Mayor Eric Adams, a former police officer, spoke at the funeral, stating that Islam believed in the American dream.

Friends and colleagues described Islam as a devoted Muslim, who lived to help others. Imam Zakir Ahmed during his speech emphasized the importance of recognizing everyday struggles that his community faces.
