Florida Set a Record for the Number of Executions in 2025

  • Florida set a record with nine executions in 2025.
  • Edward Zachrzewski was executed for the murder of his family in 1994.
  • It is expected that there will be two more executions in the state this fall.

In Florida, on July 31, 2025, the death sentence for Edward Zachrzewski was carried out, marking the ninth execution in the state this year. According to official sources, Zachrzewski was convicted for the murder of his friend and two children in 1994.

Zachrzewski, 60, was pronounced dead at 6:12 PM local time in the prison in Florida. This resulted in the establishment of a new record for the state, as in 2025 there have already been more executions than in any other year since the reinstatement of the death penalty in the USA in 1976.

Zachrzewski committed the murders in his home in Ocaloosa, where his wife was seeking a divorce. According to court records, he initially attacked his wife with a hammer and then suffocated her. After this, he killed his children, seven-year-old Edward and five-year-old Anna, with the help of a machete.

The death sentence for Zachrzewski was confirmed following numerous appeals. His last attempt to avoid execution was rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court before the execution was carried out.

Florida also plans to carry out two more executions in September, which could increase the total number of executions to 11 this year. The state remains a leader in the number of executions carried out in the USA, ahead of Texas and Oklahoma, where there have been four executions.
