NFL Begins Preseason with Moment of Silence After Shooting

  • NFL began the season with a moment of silence
  • Commissioner Goodell attended the funeral of a police officer
  • The league closed its offices until September 8 for security reasons

In Canton, Ohio, the NFL began its season at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, honoring with a moment of silence the four individuals who lost their lives as a result of a shooting in New York. The shooter, Shane Tammura, opened fire in a league headquarters, killing four people and injuring another employee.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell remained in New York to attend the funeral of police officer Diedarul Islam, one of the deceased. Goodell noted that the tragedy is significant for everyone, as it involves victims.

The league has implemented additional security measures at the stadium where the Hall of Fame game took place, and has also closed its offices until September 8, prohibiting employees from working on-site.

Tammura, a 27-year-old resident of Las Vegas, had a history of psychological issues. In a note found at the scene, he expressed dissatisfaction with the NFL over security issues related to head injuries, such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Goodell emphasized that the NFL is committed to supporting its employees during this difficult time and believes that the league can unite people through sports.
