Deputies Fired After Inmate's Release in New Orleans

  • Two deputies were fired following the inmate's release.
  • Halil Bryan remains free following the release due to a personnel review.
  • The authorities are conducting additional training and reviewing the procedures for dismissals.

On Thursday, July 31, 2025, the authorities reported the dismissal of two deputies after 30-year-old Halil Bryan was mistakenly released from New Orleans custody on July 25. According to the information, the mistake occurred due to human error, not a system glitch.

The deputies did not verify Bryan's identity, who was confused with another inmate with a similar name during the night release process. As a result, he is still at large.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office stated that the mistake occurred due to "unapproved protocols." Both deputies were fired for "serious violations of duties." Additionally, five staff members were suspended due to "negligence in executing procedures."

Sheriff of Orleans Parish Suzan Hattson stated that this incident is an unprecedented example of failure in executing duties. She emphasized that residents of New Orleans deserve a custody system that functions with accuracy and professionalism.

At the time of his release, Bryan was under a watch for several charges, including theft of stolen property and assaulting police officers. He also has an active warrant for aggressive assault with a firearm, domestic violence, and burglary.

The release was discovered approximately ten hours after the dismissal, at 11:10 on July 25. Public information about the release was shared at 15:45 that same day.

The sheriff's office decided not to inform the community immediately to avoid alerting Bryan while he was being searched for.
