The Government of El Salvador Allowed Unrestricted Reelection of the President

  • The Congress of El Salvador stated the terms for the president's reelection in office
  • Changes allow Nayib Bukele to run without restrictions
  • Bukele gained popularity due to his tough stance on crime

On Thursday, September 1, 2025, the Congress of El Salvador approved constitutional amendments that state the removal of restrictions on the territory of the president's reelection in office. This allows President Nayib Bukele to run without restrictions.

The amendments, proposed by deputy Ana Figueroa from the party New Ideas, also foresee extending the presidential term from five to six years. The next elections will be postponed to 2027 to synchronize them with elections for the legislative body and local elections.

Bukele, who has been in office since 2019, has gained popularity due to his tough stance on crime, although human rights organizations accuse him of excessive force in mass arrests. According to estimates, during extraordinary measures, nearly 75,000 people were arrested.

After the voting, which took place without debates and prior information, the president of the legislative assembly, Ernesto Castro, expressed gratitude to the deputies for the "historic decision." Critics accuse Bukele of attempting to solidify a one-party system in the country, which has caused backlash in opposition circles.

Bukele's support remains high, despite criticism, as his policies have led to a decrease in crime rates.
