In Rome, on September 1, 2025. Elon Musk, who plans to create a new political party, continues to leverage his popularity on social media X to support right-wing politicians and activists in Europe. According to Associated Press data, his interactions with these individuals lead to a significant increase in their audience.
Since the acquisition of Twitter in October 2022, Musk's follower count on the platform has risen to over 220 million. This has contributed to an increase in influence on political campaigns in Europe, where such interactions can generate millions of views.
AP research shows that over the past three years, 11 European politicians who actively interact with Musk have gained nearly 5 million new followers. Many of these individuals, including representatives of the AfD party from Germany, have become subjects of judicial investigations in their respective countries.
For instance, Alice Weidel, the leader of the AfD, reported a rise in her audience from 230,000 to 2.2 million due to interactions with Musk. Others, such as Naomi Seibt, also saw a significant increase in followers after Musk's mentions.
Musk also supports leaders of right-wing parties, such as Matteo Salvini from Italy, whose views have increased fourfold on the day of his interactions. His influence has led to a recorded increase in external interference in European politics, as critics point to the potential for manipulation from American businessmen.
Additionally, critics point out that such support for right-wing politicians may undermine the foundations of transatlantic ties that have existed for over 80 years.
