On September 1, 2025, Moscow. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Syria, Assad al-Shiban, visited Moscow, marking his first visit after the fall of Bashar Assad. During the meeting with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, they discussed relations between the two countries and Russia's support for the restored Syria.
Putin emphasized that Russia is ready to assist Syria in its restoration after years of civil war. He also confirmed the intention to maintain military presence in the country, particularly at bases in Tartus and Khmeimim. These bases are crucial for supporting Russian interests in the region.
Al-Shiban noted that the restoration of state institutions is a priority for the new government. He expressed hope for transparent recognition of the consequences of conflicts, which still affect a significant portion of the population of Syria.
During the meeting, they also discussed the issue of security for Russian citizens in Syria. Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, assured the Syrian side of their involvement in ensuring security. He reaffirmed support for the territorial integrity of Syria and Russia's readiness to assist in post-conflict restoration.
Syria is preparing for the first parliamentary elections following the fall of the Assad regime. The elections will involve 210 deputies, a third of whom will be appointed as interim president.
