SINGAPORE (AP) — 12-year-old Yu Zidi from China won a bronze medal at the World Swimming Championship, becoming the youngest swimmer in history to reach a global podium.
Yu earned the medal while competing in the preliminary heats of the 4x200 meter freestyle relay. Although she did not participate in the final, the team secured third place, finishing behind Australia and the USA.
She also competed in the finals of the 200 meters butterfly and 200 meters individual medley, where she finished fourth, missing out on a medal by just a few centimeters. She is set to compete in the 400 meters individual medley this weekend.
The head of the World Aquatics organization, Brent Nowicki, stated that the rules regarding age limits for participation in championships may be revised. Currently, the minimum age for participation is 14 years, but exceptions are made for athletes who achieve corresponding time standards.
Nowicki emphasized the importance of safeguarding against age limits, considering the physical and psychological impact on young athletes.
On Friday at the championship, there will be five finals, including events for women in the 100 meters freestyle and men in the 200 meters breaststroke.
