Opening of the FBI Office in New Zealand Sparks Controversy with China
- The FBI is opening a new office in New Zealand to combat transnational crime.
- Statements by the FBI Director prompted a negative reaction in China.
- The public in New Zealand expressed dissatisfaction with the new FBI office.
In Wellington, New Zealand, FBI Director Kash Patel opened the first independent FBI office in the country, which provoked diplomatic backlash. According to him, the new office aims to protect against Chinese influence in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean. These comments have drawn stern responses from New Zealand's ministers, who did not support Patel's statements.
The new FBI office in New Zealand will function as a liaison for agents who have worked under Australian control since 2017. Patel noted that the office will help combat the influence of the Communist Party of China, although officials in New Zealand emphasized the importance of joint efforts against transnational crime without mentioning China.
Patel's statements elicited negative reactions from China. A representative of China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Gao Feng expressed concern that such cooperation should not be aimed at targeting a third party, as it does not contribute to maintaining peace in the region.
New Zealand, as the smallest member of the Five Eyes alliance, faces pressure to align its position with the USA, which is its largest trading partner. Experts note that Patel's comments could complicate this situation.
The opening of the new office has also sparked outrage among New Zealanders, who expressed their negative views on social media. There were even plans for a protest against the opening of the office.
