This is reported by Asharq Al-Awsat, Meduza.
On September 1, 2025, the Ministry of Defense of Russia announced that its forces had captured the city of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine after 16 months of fighting. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian side, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, dismissed this information, calling it disinformation and propaganda.
Video, published by Russian troops, shows a flag being raised in the destroyed city, however, Ukrainian sources indicate that their forces still control parts of the western and southern outskirts. Analysts indicate that fighting continues, and the situation for Ukrainian forces in Chasiv Yar is complicated by pressure from several directions.
Zelensky, in his evening address, noted that Ukrainian units are trying to hold their positions and repel attacks from Russian forces. According to military analyst Emile Kastehelmi, if the capture of Chasiv Yar is confirmed, it could create conditions for further offensive operations by Russian troops in eastern Ukraine.
Fighting for the city began in April 2024, and during this time Chasiv Yar, with a population of up to 12 thousand before the war, has seen significant destruction. The city is located in the elevated territories of Donetsk and is strategically important for both sides of the conflict.
