Kir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, is grappling with internal supermajorities regarding the future of the party. In the spring of 2025, he will conduct consultations to find a new path following losses, such as situations with reforms in social security.
Within the party, there is a divide between the right and left wings. The head of Starmer's staff, Morgan Maxsuni, is pushing for a return to the selection of candidates from the red belt, which supports Nigel Farage. Meanwhile, the left wing of the party is closing in on a more progressive approach to attract candidates who have left Labour for the benefit of Liberal Democrats and Greens.
Starmer emphasized that the party must remain progressive, resisting populists, and stated that it is necessary to address issues such as child poverty and clean energy. He acknowledged that the party must talk more about its achievements to regain the trust of voters.
However, a recent attack by Peter Kyla on Farage, which included exaggerated statements, did not meet expectations and provoked criticism. This demonstrated that Labour cannot outmaneuver Farage in his own game.
At the same time, the new socialist party, founded by Jeremy Corbyn and Zara Sultana, is drawing attention and already has over 600,000 registered members. While its launch is accompanied by chaos, it shows that part of the electorate is seeking an alternative to Labour.
Starmer is determined to decide whether to shift the party leftward to attract progressive voters or to focus on retaining traditional support among the right. This question remains open, as upcoming elections could be critical for the party.
