LONDON (AP) — England quickly scored 109-1 after 16 overs, dominating in the first session of the second day of the fifth test, which India needed to win to level the series.
Under the captaincy of Gus Atkinson, who took five key wickets, England quickly dismissed India for 224, first starting the attack, reducing their deficit to 115 runs at lunch.
Zak Crawley (52 not out) and captain Ollie Pope (12 not out) remained at the crease for England, who currently lead the series 2-1. Openers Crawley and Ben Duckett (43) quickly reached 50 runs in just the seventh over, surpassing his previous score of 19 boundaries.
India earlier replied with 204-6, but could only add 20 runs for 5.4 overs, the first time they had been dismissed. Karun Nair was out for 57, falling under the bat of Josh Tongue (3-57), who proved to be an effective threat for the batters.
Atkinson finished the innings with figures of 5-33, demolishing the weak tail of India. Washington Sundar (26) was dismissed in the over, while the next two batters were called to the crease Mukhammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
English players honored the memory of Graham Thorpe, wearing black armbands, as Friday marked the 56th birthday of Thorpe, who passed away last month.
In the first session, England played a dominating game, and Crawley continued to pile on the runs, quickly scoring runs. At that time, while Duckett was trying to execute a traditional shot, his attempt ended in an auto, but he did not react to the provocation from India.
